newtown finished first. just barely. it was one of the closest races we've ever had between newtown and the election. >> i mean, at this point actually after the interview we had last hour, with the congressman, i think this is going to be something that brings us into the next year with a goal united as a country you'd hope. i'm not sure how united we're going to be though in washington about this. >> yeah. i think that was what struck people as why this was important. there have been plenty of mass shootings but they feel this has staying power in terms of policy changes. >> jonathan capehart? >> yeah. i think -- i think the newtown shootings have staying power and have resonated so much because, you know, we've been through mass shootings before as we've been discussing but this is the first time at least in my memory that we've seen a massacre perpetrated by someone from the outside inside an elementary school where the victims, most of the victims were 6 and 7 years old. if you can't see a way to have a change of he

how will an inappropriate response by our party to the tragedies of newtown, the new realities of newtown, impact us moving forward as a party? i say this again, as a man that saw the republican party's biggest problems up close, with a new generation of voters? sn>> look, i don't know how it will affect the party. but as a -- public policy matter in the wake of last friday, you are reminded of a lot of things. one of is how perplexing this problem is. there's no easy solution. yesterday morning, you went through the range of things, the availability of weapons, the psychological issues, the influences in our culture, the sociological influences. there's no one solution. but i think, i would say to everyone, across the political spectrum, including and especially those on the right, you got to kind of be at the table now and you've got to check your ideological baggage at the door. by the way, i'm not a second amendment absolutist any more than first amendment absolutist. we are going to have to reign in and address some of these rights or access to content or weapons or whatever it is in

which is the massacre at the elementary school in sandy hook, newtown. those are the stories that barnicle and andrew have chosen as the top stories of 2012 to cover. mike barnicle, would you agree, that this could be his signature for his second term? >> i do. i do agree with that. i think the events of a few days ago in newtown, connecticut, will help shape a good portion of the president's second and final term in office. i think it gives us a huge impetus to changes in this country that had been, that have taken too long to take hold. i think the presidency itself, i think the man himself was shaped and altered by these events, both as a parent and as a president. >> andrea? >> let me just say that joe call fanno has written about what lbj said to him right after robert kennedy was killed. lbj killed in joe and the other top aides in the white house and said, we have to act within ten days before the nra gets organized. and they failed to do it. they tried and they failed. and lbj had a bill that had been bottled up in committee for months and months

also newtown. it's a cool move by my alma mater. we should never forget. let's talk about jobs numbers. 350,000 is the weekly jobless claims numbers, better than expected. the week to week data can be noisy. a lot of it is estimated. here's the good news. the four-week moving average fell to the lowest in a couple of years. we wanted to see the trend go down. week to week is key, but the long-term trend has to shift down and it continues to fall so the four-week moving average, the monthly number if you will continues to drop. that is good news and the futures are higher and indicating stocks will go up today. >> speaking of trends, front page "wall street journal" home prices hit a milestone. the tide has changed. shou th how is that going to hit the market? >> that's the greatest in terms of overall confidence. confidence is everything. that's one of the things i have been critical about and talking about the fiscal cliff and saying we are doomed. if you feel like your assets whether stocks or your home are going up in value, you are going to feel more c

it was very timely because of newtown. >> yeah. you know, two days before christm christmas sadly i attended the funeral of a 26-year-old magnificent young woman that died of cancer. another jesuit stood up in the pulpit and raised the issue of suffering. that we know what suffering is and we're surrounded by suffering. he said, don't try to define suffering or find out where it comes from. no one has ever been able to come up with with that answer. no one ever will, which gets to your point. >> that's right. i think that sometimes we find ourselves trying to grapple with things and come with answers to things that there's no answer to. we feel like something is wrong with us, when it's just part of life. there are things beyond our understanding. that's why st. paul, if i could be preacher-like, you have to find a peace beyond understanding. i think that's what really coming to it terms with whatever your beliefs are where you can come to piece with the fact that there are some things beyond you but you proceed in life anyway. i l

that was a mother who had kids in the newtown high school. so i just thought it was -- it's interesting that even in that community where they've gone through all of this, there are different opinions on how you best deal with this. i speak to some people on the gun control side. i spoke on to one person who has a very hard line on this, the author of a book "more guns less crime." he says every single time there have been implementation of tougher gun laws, it hasn't done anything to really remove gun crime, it to distinguish gun crimes. now, that's not totally true. there are examples around the world. australia in '96 with a mass shooting and they implemented tough gun laws. mass shootings haven't happened since. in britain it took time. we had our own horrendous killing of small children in a scottish school. there was a spike in gun crime after a handgun law was introduced. it lasted four years, and aafter that we see a decline of gun crimes in britain. there are example where is the law is changed and the gun crimes have diminished. >>

the scariest thing for newtown was when i g-chatted my fellow editor in new york to plot out coverage and we knew exactly what to do because we'd done it three times before. it had gone so routine and so disturbing. i'm worried i'm going to be writing the same stories that i did after every single -- >> we can't desensitize ourselves to this. >> we're not going to. and i -- i have heard about '68 as far as what califano said and how quickly we have to move. this is different. the horrors of martin luther king, the horrors of bobby kennedy, the horrors of all the violence, the gun violence through the years, a million americans killed. mark halperin, as horrific as all of those murders have been, nothing -- nothing has jarred americans like what happened last friday. it just hasn't. and americans aren't going to forget this. they are not going to forget this. and they are expecting action. and you worry again if republicans and democrats can't come to a decision on basically rounding errors over ten years, how are they going to address the bigger issues? >> well, we don't really know h
